Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood is known for its iconic intersection of commerce and culture. As one of the most diverse communities, Bronzeville also has an abundance of great architecture from spectacular Victorian-era homes to 19th-century mansions.
Yu & Associates Collaborative was tasked to bring a red brick building on Prairie Avenue back to her former glory, in addition to completing an extensive interior gut renovation. Our studio was commissioned to convert this 1900’s 2-flat to a high-end, single-family home with a fresh and elegant interior. Through dialogue with the client and with multiple iterations explored, we developed a floor plan that included all of the programs from both the “must-have” and “want” lists, within the original building footprint and envelope. The main floor features an open concept with a custom chef’s kitchen while the second floor has all private bedrooms. Additional square footage was added from a finished basement that is now a large family room. Besides maximizing efficiency and rearranging the entire building, we also focused on details such as creating custom millwork and elements throughout for a coherent style.
Our final design’s timeless style is a culmination of functionality and client preference, bringing this Bronzeville home back to life for a long time to come.
