Established in the late 19th century, the Village of Maywood, Illinois, was organized 11 miles west of Chicago’s downtown as a standalone settlement on the city’s original railroad artery. Throughout its 130 years, Maywood developed into a modern, suburban community that maintains its history with preserved homes dating back to the village’s founding.
Yu & Associates Collaborative had the recent opportunity to complete renovate, add, and modernize a 60-year Maywood home. While working with the constraint of a limited existing footprint, our studio conceptualized an open layout that permeated with natural light to provide a sense of openness for a young growing family. Joined by a casual dining area, the main floor consists of a bright, custom kitchen and living space before it culminates in a massive deck beckoning occupants and visitors into a welcoming backyard. The basement level is centered around a large but cozy bar, while the second floor holds three comfortable bedrooms, each designed specifically with a color theme for each of the children. A private master suite featuring a walk-in closet and master bath occupies the attic, all filled and illuminated with natural light from above through custom skylights.
As the entire construction was completed in less than a year and a half, the family is looking forward to enjoying this energetic new home in a historic neighborhood and creating memories entering its next chapter.
