CAMBRIDGE MODERN
Cambridge, Minnesota, is a bucolic, midwestern setting an hour north of the Twin Cities and bisected by the iconic Rum River. With homes dating as far back as the early 20th century, the community features a wide variety of architectural styles. Our clients tasked Yu & Associates Collaborative with updating their recently-purchased 1970’s single-family home with downward, sloping river access to better fit their active lifestyle. This home’s unique elements included an outdated spiral staircase and an oversized black and gold tub that recessed into the family room.
Our concept was to design around a new modernized central connecting stair that acts as the main circulating spine while integrating the natural landscape surrounding the home. Program requirements included a reconfigured kitchen, dining room, living room, downstairs family room, bar, and a flexible storage area. Eliminating unneeded utility areas while adding additional kitchen space presented expansive views of the green backyard and scenic river. Integrating shelving around the central stair provided creative and functional storage while acting as a natural barrier between the kitchen and formal dining room. Instead of the antiquated bathroom effects, we utilized the master bath’s large skylight to create a modern and fresh aesthetic. Downstairs, we rearranged the family room and bar area so daylight filtering in from the natural landscape can enhance a comfortable family gathering space. The final design embodies the vision and lifestyle of the clients by creating a modern, fresh, and unique single-family home that fits the timelessness of its community. |
